A paver deck is only as good as what sits under it. We strip the old surface, then grade and compact the base. Grading sets the fall, so water runs away from the pool instead of pooling at the coping. Sandy Brevard soil drains fast, but loose sand still settles under chairs and foot traffic.

A screeded bedding layer goes down next, then the pavers around the pool in the pattern you picked. A freeform pool means every course meets a curve, so there is real saw work at the edge. Edge restraint locks the outside border in place. Joint sand goes in last, and the deck gets compacted and swept clean.

Coping is the cap on the pool edge, and it sets the look of the whole deck. Some decks keep the coping that is already there, and the new pavers butt right up to it. Others get new paver coping with a rounded bullnose front. A loose or hollow cap gets reset before anything else goes down.

What are my options for pool deck resurfacing?

A pool deck remodel starts with the slab, not the surface. A chalky top and hairline cracks are surface problems, and the deck under them is usually sound. Slabs that sank at a corner or opened a wide crack are a different story. Capping a moving slab moves the crack up into the new surface.

Two routes redo a sound deck without tearing it out. Thin pavers go over the existing concrete and give you a real paver surface. The height and edge details for that live on our paver overlays page. The other route is a stamped concrete overlay, bonded to the old slab and stamped with a pattern.

Sometimes resurfacing is the wrong call. When the slab is broken up or draining toward the house, a new deck is the fix. It costs more and takes longer than a cap over the top. It is also the only route that solves a base problem instead of hiding it.

Color drives how hot a pool deck gets. Light tan and gray tones stay cooler than dark charcoal or deep red. In July that gap is the difference between walking and hopping. We can leave samples in the sun on your deck so you feel it before you choose.

Texture is the other half of it. A slick surface is a problem when kids run out of the water. Heavy textures grip well but feel rough on bare feet, so pool decks land in the middle. Glossy sealers get slippery when wet, so a matte or penetrating sealer fits better here.

Salt systems and chlorine leave their mark on a deck. Splash zones take the worst of it, and joint sand can wash low right at the pool edge. Topping that sand back up is most of the upkeep on a paver deck. New pavers can also haze white for a few months, which is efflorescence, and it fades.

Screen enclosures and deck extensions

Most Brevard pools sit inside a screened lanai, and the cage shapes the work. The aluminum base track and the posts sit right on the deck. No machine fits through a screen door, so material moves by wheelbarrow or gets pumped in. An open deck is easier to build, though it takes full sun and every summer storm.

Height is the other cage issue. Thin pavers over an old deck raise the surface about an inch and a half. A stamped overlay adds much less, closer to a quarter inch. That difference decides whether your door threshold and coping still work.

Deck extensions are common here, usually for a grill area or a row of lounge chairs. New concrete will not match twenty year old concrete, so a poured extension reads as a different color. Pavers get around that, since the added section is meant to look like its own field. If the work runs past the deck, a paver patio can carry the same material into the yard.

What drives the cost of a pool deck?

Square footage is the starting number, and shape moves it from there. A rectangle cuts fast, while a freeform pool with a spa takes far more cutting and fitting. Demolition and haul off add cost when an old deck has to come out. Access counts too, since a narrow side gate or a screen cage means everything moves by hand.
